Top 10 Serena Van der Woodsen Dream Dresses

It has been a little late, but I just finished watching the entire series of Gossip Girl in the space of about three months. I was pretty into it and not because of the superb acting or completely realistic drama plots, but due to the amazing fashion I was exposed to in every episode. Although they may not have been great people, Serena Van der Woodsen and Blair Waldorf were the ultimate style queens who I most definitely bowed down to. With their Chanel this and Prada that, those ladies tossed me into a great big pool of green envy I would never be able to escape from. And there is no doubt that Serena Van der Woodsen was the object of the majority of that envy from girls around the world.  So to demonstrate my appreciation of her unwavering beauty and formidable fashion, I compiled a top ten list of my favourite formal fashion she wore through-out the entire series. You may acknowledge that it was not an easy task to undertake. So, in no particular order:

  1. gold dress s 1

The dress that made Dan Humphrey fall in love with Serena Van der Woodsen. She established herself as the golden girl in Pamela Dennis couture, and undoubtedly the best dressed at that ball.

2.de8ca6a3652b3d57d916c87481fc6dee

Looking like an ethereal rockstar with the waist embellishment and tulle skirt with the varied length.

3.

peach orange dress

Grecian gowns will always be in fashion, particularly with the modern twist of the thigh split and grey sandal heels. Oh S, why were you such a grecian goddess?

4.

Blake-Lively-Serena3

You can never put a foot wrong when wearing a black, sleeveless long gown with a hint of sparkles. Instant class and seduction.

5.

ellie saab grey dress

Zuhair Murad created a masterpiece with this transparent grey lace dress. The satin sash provides a unique and elegant touch which perfectly balances out the intricate lace.

6.

jenny-packham-fall-2010-long-dress-and-serena-van-der-woodsen-gallery

Fierce and fresh gown by Jenny Packham. That aquamarine beading is on point. At first I found the peek-a-boo at the front slightly distasteful, but eventually I decided that it compliments the long sleeves and the entire visual of the dress is gorgeous.

7.

maid of honour dress s

Perhaps even overshadowing the bride herself, Serena looked like a high-class couture model in this ivory pink chiffon gown as a maid of honour. That one-shoulder touch practically makes the gown.

8.

blue dress s

Is there a colour she can’t wear? This periwinkle blue gown looks fairytale-esque with the frilled bottom of the transparent skirt and blue flowers decorating the bust and waist area.

9.

So simple, yet so elegant with the subtle lace and faced yellow. The belt offers a modern touch to a feminine gown.

10.

Final season wedding dress

….And she always remained the golden girl in Georges Chakra. It’s only fitting that she married the love of her life in gold, the colour that caught Dan’s heart. Yes that was cringingly corny, but so is the whole of Gossip Girl. After six seasons of fantastically bad drama it was sure to rub off on me. Ahh, that golden train. Probably constructed from real gold, too.

So, what are your thoughts on my top 10? Did I miss any staggeringly gorgeous S moments? Let me know in the comments below!

The Golden Girls

With the first notable fashion event of the year done and dusted, it’s time to reflect on the real stars of the 2015 Golden Globe Awards and their killer adornments. Although everyone appeared dapper and decorated on the evening, there were a few who particularly stood out against the luminosity of the red carpet.

She was the vision of a classic Hollywood siren, complete with a Marilyn Monroe-like curly bob and dazzling diamonds. I love the voluptuous shape of the waist and hips and the tasteful neckline.

What’s not to like about a sparkly gold dress with cut-out pieces in all of the right places?

Cate Blanchett wearing Givenchy

The pale pink tassels are a very bold choice from fashion icon Cate, however she manages to magnificently pull it off with her typical elegance and a matching custom purse.

Jaimie Alexander wearing Genny

This emerald creation by Genny exudes glamour and perfectly compliments the stunning wearer with her dazzling green earrings and striking eyes.

Jenna Dewan Tatum wearing Zuhair Murad

What can I say? It’s a Zuhair Murad creation that could stun even the most elaborately dressed Disney princess.

Rooney Mara wearing Alexander McQueen

This Alexander McQueen nude masterpiece looks as though its an extension of Mara’s skin in the least gruesome way. In my opinion, not everyone could pull off a gown as unique as this but the Carol star makes it look effortless.

The Empire winner appears fiercely goddess-like in this simple Stella McCartney piece. Ahh that cape…

So, who do you think took the award for the best dressed on the night?

What 2015 Wore

With 2015 coming to a close, there is no better time to reflect on the fashion heights and falls of the year that Marty McFly was meant to travel to.

Trends of the Year

The ‘Barely There’ Dress

Less is more clearly with this trend, which saw daring celebrities such as Kim K, Beyonce and Rihanna demonstrate how some transparent material and Swarovski sparklers can make a feminine and overtly sexy ensemble. Others raised their eyebrows over the dauntless fashion choice, with acclaimed designer Caroline Herrera describing the trend as ‘attention seeking’ and criticising modern fashion for being ‘counter-productive’. Although harsh, I do believe that some merit lies in her argument: how can something be described as fashion if nothing is being worn?

Sky-high slits

We then proceed to the next (bare) trend, being thigh high, or in some cases, hip high slits. Slits in in the middle of skirts and dresses dominated the spring 2015 catwalks, whereas hip high slits dominated the red carpets this year with many celebrities opting to displace their underwear and putting on display their cheeky area for the occasion. Gigi Hadid was most notably a fan of the trend to the point that I have created a collage of her leg-exposed glory. When you have pins like that, I say go for it. Just remember to put your knickers on.

Off-the-shoulder tops

There is just something about bare skin that has become a fashion trend in itself this year. Off-the-shoulder tops are feminine and versatile, in addition to having the advantage of being worn in both summer and winter. Long sleeve, short sleeve and hippie sleeve off-the-shoulder tops permeated celebrities’ Instagram accounts and also manifested themselves as dresses.

Jumpsuits

Why pay for a top and matching pants when you can wear a jumpsuit instead? Not only do they tend to offer the comfort factor, but they also appear remarkably flattering and cut a sleek silhouette when cinched in at the waist. This year saw many fashion-conscious individuals ‘jump’ on the bandwagon and don all-in-ones in a variety of styles and colours. Jumpsuits truly are the only uniforms women need to get some serious s**t done.

Fashion event of the year- Balmain x H&M

Sold out in a single hour after opening all of the world, the Balmain x H&M collection was one of the most anticipated collaborations of the year with queues forming outside of the flagship H&M stores days before the opening. With Kendall Jenner, Gigi Hadid and Jourdan Dunn leading the campaign, the collection that was overseen by Balmain head designer Olivier Rousteing acquired a massive following and proved to be wildly successful. Naturally I was one of those crazy people who eagerly lined up hours beforehand, just ’cause.

Model of the year – Gigi Hadid

You could tussle up between Gigi and Kendall for model of the year, but in my view it was undeniably Gigi. Not only did she dominate the catwalks in 2015 by walking for Balmain, Versace, Tommy Hilfiger and Giambattista Valli, but the blonde beauty also managed to achieve the much-coveted position of walking in the Victoria’s Secret show. She led highly acclaimed campaigns for Max Mara, Topshop and Tom Ford, and successfully took down body-haters with her parade of achievements.

So there we go, an end of another year of documenting fashion’s finest and stalking Victoria’s Secret models’ Instagrams. In fashion there will always be faux pas and trends that will be looked on in 10 years time as disconcerting and ever so slightly humiliating, however it’s always plenty of fun. From the naked dress to pyjama-inspired jumpsuits, there is no end to the versatility of fashion and the ability to demonstrate your personal creativity through the way you dress yourself. Just always remember to wear underwear.

I wish everyone a safe and happy new year and a fabulous 2016! x

Off the Trend

This season is all about letting it loose and letting your shoulders breathe. The off-the-shoulder trend has gained prominence through being paraded by It-girls during fashion weeks this year, and they have shown that off-the-shoulder tops can come in any shape and design. They are perfect for the warmer months and there is something seductive and refreshing about bearing your shoulders to a warm spring breeze.

There are zillions of styles of off-the-shoulder tops and dresses that can suit any style of shorts, pants and skirts. The bohemian/hippy trend is a stand-out this spring/summer and off-the-shoulder tops are a perfect bohemian staple item.

Here is my own winter/spring attempt at the old off-the-shoulder with a long-sleeve top and high-waisted, suede shorts.

Clashing Prints

For all the poor souls undergoing winter in the southern hemisphere, there is a risk that you should all take: clashing prints. It only takes a couple of mismatched stripes to render it as a failure, but a successful match can be magical.

It was seen across Milan, Paris, London and Barcelona Fall Fashion Week and has become a defining trend of 2015.

It can be quite the challenge, but makes fashion fun and exciting. Pairing different prints together have usually been a big no-no until recently, as designers and stylists have exposed the secrets to the creation of the clash.

To create the perfect clash, here are a few handy hints:

  • Matching colours: if you choose to wear diverse colours, ensure that they match and don’t look as though they have been put together by a clown. Using neutral shades accompanied by a bold colour works well, allowing the bold colour and print to stand out as demonstrated by Zendaya below.

  • Size of prints: You are destined to succeed if a small print is matched with a large print. It becomes too overwhelming if both are prominent and can potentially look as though a three-year old dressed you. Pairing a minimalistic print with a larger one causes the eye-catching print to stand out against a more plain type, and hence they compliment one another without clashing.

  • Two prints max: I would suggest no more than two different prints combined. If you delve into a third, there is a high risk of an unfortunate clash occurring.

These stylish ladies inspired me to have my own crack at it.

Fashionably Oscars

The belatedness of this post may infuriate you, but I have just decided on my favourite dresses from the Oscars 2015. Yes, that feels like centuries ago. Initially I was not overwhelmed by any of the ladies’ outfit choices for the evening to be brutally honest, as I had not come across the jaw-dropping/Oscars-defining dress that I’m usually exposed to. But then I flicked through the gowns again and decided that everyone looked fantastic, and hence it was difficult to pinpoint a dress that has changed the course of my life forever. Instead I picked a few which made me very happy.

Georgina Chapman Marchesa
Georgina Chapman-Marchesa     vogue.com.au

Few women would be capable of pulling off this gown as effortlessly as Georgina. It’s beautifully adorned and styled with her simple hair and accessories, completely eliminating the possibility that it could be ‘too much’. I particularly love the sheer long sleeves and length of the gown, which make her look like a regal Spanish queen. We can all at least agree that this dress is black and gold.

Jessica Chastain Givenchy
Jessica Chastain – Givenchy      vogue.com.au

Alas another creation by Givenchy, Jessica appears elegant with a sprinkle of sexy. With jewels by Piaget, the dress accentuates her hourglass figure while the navy blue stunningly contrasts against her TV-commercial-worthy hair. It is almost as though you could remove the the loose shoulder straps and unveil an alluring sequin party dress underneath. For me, this is the symbol of red carpet glamour.

Rosamund Pike Givenchy
Rosamund Pike-Givenchy      vogue.com.au

So for starters, Rosamund had a baby about three months ago. This was only one of the things which impressed the pants off me, in addition to how she worked that belt and how that belt worked for the dress. She wore Givenchy Haute Couture and not unlike Jessica, flaunted a beautiful hourglass figure and looked better in red than the carpet. (I know that was a lame crack.)

Lupita Nyong'o Custom Calvin Klein
Lupita Nyong’o – Custom Calvin Klein      vogue.com.au

To be honest, this lady can make a bright purple garbage bag look magnificently unique and chic. I am not so sure if I would love it on anyone else, which is why it had to be included in the top of my list. I swear a star fell from the sky and landed in front of her feet in an effort to commemorate her utter brilliance on the night.

And for the ultimate trend of the evening which leaves absolutely nothing to the dullest imagination…….

Although the ‘barely there’ trend can appear as a little ‘cheap’ and maybe distasteful to the naked eye, I congratulate these ladies for having the confidence and ability to pull off such a feat.

Hot bod and a nice booty is recommended, a full brazilian – compulsory.
