Last weekend I attended a wedding. Without a doubt, my favourite part is always watching the happy couple profess their love for one another, closely followed by the food and (surprise!) looking fancy. I absolutely adore formal occasions, and this was no exception. Some people find dressing up arduous, whereas I find it invigorating. The evening was very special and the couple appeared incredibly happy. I was very happy on the dance floor with some champagne.
I opted for a cobalt blue dress from Forever New, which I was hoping would make my tan pop. Accompanying the dress is my sister’s perfectly matching bag, and clearly I was overjoyed by how well this outfit was coordinated.
One of the most exciting things arrived in my mailbox the other day: they were stockings decorated with the silhouette of the Paris skyline. I can literally walk around with the sights of Paris daintily resting above my knee. How cool is that. So while adventuring around the city of Melbourne I flaunted the skyline of Paris, much to the bemused looks of wandering Melbournians. Honestly, these stockings caught the gaze of so many people that I almost started feeling self-conscious.
Asos had a sale on socks and stockings not that long ago which was when I came across these stockings, as well as many others with cute patterns just above the knee to give the appearance of over-the-knee socks. Only these keep your thighs warm too and they won’t fall down.
I found a $6 hat in a shop the other day. I’m not typically a hat person because honestly I feel like they just don’t suit me, but the reduced price tag and the maroon colour was screaming out at me. This was the beginning of my fascination with hats-not so much on how they suit me-but other people’s magical abilities to pull them off. Nina Dobrev wears them religiously and looks fantastic. And with the amount of people rocking the wide-brimmed felt hats for winter it has become clear to me that hats are no longer confined to being worn for protection against the sun and for covering up a case of forgot-to-wash-my-hair-oops. I was inspired to wear it for non-beach and non-chaotic hair purposes on a day out. I actually enjoyed it, and I even felt lighter on my toes despite the extra head-weight which does not make sense. Unfortunately it meant that if I took it off when I was indoors I’d have to deal with some seriously static hair. Needless to say I rarely removed it from my head.
I must add that I am tremendously excited that it is now winter. Somehow the cold and grey skies make me want to get creative. And blog more. Which is something that I have neglected because education has been a large obstacle for time. Learning is great but it hasn’t left me much time to blog, or even get out of the house to be overly honest. Until next time, hopefully I’ll acquire more inexpensive and fun hats to play with!
Last Saturday was International Women’s day, and despite the fact the women’s accomplishments should be celebrated any day, having a specific day devoted to women’s empowerment allows everyone to reflect on the truly amazing feats that women are capable of achieving. It is recognition of the political, economic and social achievements of women in the past and present and is looking ahead at potential opportunities for success. From all corners of the globe, women of different backgrounds who speak diverse languages congregate to celebrate the struggles that women have overcome as well as to raise awareness of the conflicts that remain in the lives of women today.
Inspiration is something which I don’t lack in my life, as I have my beautiful mother and older sister as my role models to help guide me. A woman who has become a role model overnight due to her rapid success in Hollywood is Lupita Nyong’o. At the seventh annual Black Women in Hollywood Luncheon, the Oscar winner delivered an inspirational speech on how she overcame her low self-esteem to follow her dreams. She described a letter that she had received from a young girl with dark skin who had considered buying skin-whitening cream- until she noticed a lady with the same dark complexion on the world’s stage. Unknowingly, Lupita’s success inspired this girl to change her view of herself as well as to imaginably thousands of others. She concluded her incredible speech with an important message to young girls:
“I hope that my presence on your screens and in magazines will lead you, young girl, on a similar journey. That you will feel the validation of your external beauty, but also get to the deeper business of being beautiful inside. There is no shade in that beauty.”
Some people are capable of making a difference despite not anticipating the impact it can have on others. On top of being a young woman who has already made her mark in Hollywood and in the lives of many girls today, the lady knows how to dress to impress. Donning a heavenly pastel blue Prada gown which complimented her in every way, Lupita shone on the red carpet. I especially loved her addition of the headband, which is not something which can be easily pulled off. Perhaps it’s not so subtle but I may have a girl crush.

..And now back to a less glamorous place. Weather in Melbourne has actually been consistent for the past week which is a rare event. The warm temperatures have meant that I could still leave my jeans behind and sport a pair of shorts. I do like bustier tops, however I find that it can occasionally look too- dare I say it- ‘teenybopper’ and cheap when worn simply with skimpy shorts or a skirt. Instead I like to match it up with a cardigan or in this case, a light white shirt!
It’s been too long, I am well aware. Part of it has been because I’ve been away on holidays, and a small part of it is because I’ve been too lazy. Nonetheless, there is no excuse. Except for the fact that I’m embarking on my final year in school which has resulted in my favourite hobby being pushed down on my list of priorities. It’s going to be difficult to continue with my blog, but it might serve as a means of escape so we’ll see!
Australia day is a very special day for those inhabiting this beautiful country. For me, it’s a good excuse to celebrate how privileged I am by spending time with family and friends and donning those Australian flag printed bikinis that can only be taken out of the wardrobe once a year. I went to Docklands in the city which was surrounded by a lot of activity. There were stalls selling those infamous cork hats that were calling to me until I settled on an Australian flag bucket hat instead. Ironically, I went to a Chinese restaurant for dinner. It was a lovely day.
I decided against wearing the green and gold colour scheme because there’s no way I could rock it. I opted for turquoise and crème which is kind of similar. I love high-waisted shorts and I love embellished tops, and in particular this top, but it is so ridiculously fragile that a couple of beads fell off on my second occasion of wearing it -_-
Well, judging by the bright hues of green plastering braches and nature strips, spring is well in force but is taking its time to bring the increasing warmth with it. No matter though, in the rare glimpses of summer I tossed off my jeans and let my legs breathe. Ahhh, the unfamiliar yet refreshing feel of a warm breeze. I’m even sporting florals to express my spring jubilation.
The top is actually a playsuit. My growth spurt has forced me to stop wearing it in its natural form due to the over-exposure of, um, flesh.
The other night I went out with my family for my lovely sister’s birthday. We threw on our finest and set off for a très classy evening at a fancy restaurant, expecting a night of delicious food and bad birthday singing. Needless to say, it did not disappoint, and the food turned out to be better than the singing.

I wore a midnight-blue and gold 80’s-esque number (minus the shoulder pads) that I recently bought. As soon as I saw it I grabbed it and knew I had to try it on because it’s reminiscent of a pink and gold dress that I used to wear back in the days of feathery scrunchies. Who doesn’t miss those days. I brightened it up with my red bag and finished it off with some smashing lippy. Red lipstick always makes me feel as though I can pull anything off.
Leather for winter is like being offered free money: always welcome. And especially this year with a massive revival of the silver-studded biker jackets from a couple of years ago and the clunky leather boots, leather (real or fake) is always on trend for winter one way or another. However I chose to downgrade the edgy, lethal look black leather usually provides by pairing it up with a relatively dainty dress that is often too delicate in appearance to wear on its own. Incorporating my vintage leather jacket balances out the wildly feminine look and also makes the dress wearable in winter, which is a bonus.
It was suspiciously not bone-cold chilly the other day which granted me the luxury of deciding not to don a coat outdoors. This was exciting because I don’t own a coat that compliments the dress to my liking, so a single layer could suffice in the pleasant temperature. I bought the dress yonks ago from a small market and thankfully leopard print in public continues to be acceptable, and although I’m not entirely convinced that the kinky print can be pulled off as a beacon of sophistication, I am completely sold on this dress.
The over-the-knee socks worked well in the weather and to liven up the outfit I adopted a vintage bag that I discovered during my annual exploration through my mother’s wardrobe. She may have owned some timeless pieces, but there was plenty of rubbish among the gems that she is convinced will come back in style ‘sometime soon’. I don’t have the heart to tell her that it’s 20 years past the time.
Wowzers. It really has been a while and the only excuse that I can offer is that I have been super busy doing non-fashion related things (namely being locked up in my study with coffee and trackies while cramming my butt off) which has left me with basically zero time to document anything really. I apologise profusely and regret that I have neglected my blog for this while. But no need to dwell in the past, because presently it is officially winter, and for those who are accustomed to my repetitive rants would be aware of my enthusiasm for the chilly season. And it has by no means disappointed, because already in June the temperatures have fallen drastically close to snow weather and I have spent copious amounts of time wishing I had a whole wardrobe of coats to flaunt in these freezing temperatures. Of course snow is practically unheard of in Melbourne, but if climate change is legitimately transpiring then anything is possible.
Anyway back to my point. Unless you tend not to part with your lovely heater, you would have realised that monochrome, which is a fancy word that refers to the black and white trend, is huge. So colossal in fact that black and white are the only visible colours in select stores- I do not jest. I’m not complaining about this, purely because black and white are relatively flattering on most people and ever classy as an outfit. Personally, I find limiting your outfit’s visual appeal to these two colours (or shades, take your pick) makes it appear a little stiff for casual wear, so I tend to employ some other colour to make it pop.
Below I am wearing my 50’s 3/4 pants which provide that pop effect, and is accompanied by a black trench coat to protect me just in case snow-like substances appear from the sky anytime soon. I am probably crazy to wear clogs in this weather but with scarf like that, who cares.
