A Night of Croquet, Anyone?

The winter run in Melbourne continues. I dusted off my jacket and wore it to the Royal Croquet Club, a swanky outdoor festival happening in Melbourne where people can have a crack of croquet and a cup of Pimms with friends. The croquet playing wasn’t particularly successful, but the Pimms was!

I have previously expressed my distaste for wearing leggings in public, as like ugg boots, they are built for undeniable comfort rather than show. I may have committed my own cardinal sin, as the stripy pants I was strolling around in *can* be classified as leggings. BUT WAIT-my multi-coloured underwear were not visible throughout the stripy print and I suspect that you are shocked that they are not proper pants, hence they are ACCEPTABLE. Unless they’re for actual croquet playing, leggings are too snug around the edges for a classy day out. Wear a top that extends over the gluteus maximus if you must, or risk having your pantie lines exposed (ladies, you know what I mean). But truthfully, the comfort these pants provide is pretty awesome.

Swinter

The other day I watched flocks of people scuttle around Melbourne city in their coats and scarves with disbelief. For those who do not live in the southern hemisphere, this is an uncanny observation. It is summer after all, and typically, we Melbournians should be sweltering in 30+ degree weather by now. Naturally I was shocked by this sudden bout of winter and was caught in only a blazer to keep me warm.

Obviously both Melbourne and I were not in a summer mood, because although I was unaware of the cool weather, I had decided to wear my favourite winter blazer. The bottle green tone creates a nice contrast with the cream, and also helps in dressing down the bordering-on-formal dress. Wearing pretty flats can assist in dressing down an outfit without making it look cheap, so I find it within my best interests to keep an army of nice sandals or ballet flats for when I go out. This comes in handy considering I still struggle with the discomfort of heels.

Blue Summer

Last weekend I attended a wedding. Without a doubt, my favourite part is always watching the happy couple profess their love for one another, closely followed by the food and (surprise!) looking fancy. I absolutely adore formal occasions, and this was no exception. Some people find dressing up arduous, whereas I find it invigorating. The evening was very special and the couple appeared incredibly happy. I was very happy on the dance floor with some champagne.

I opted for a cobalt blue dress from Forever New, which I was hoping would make my tan pop. Accompanying the dress is my sister’s perfectly matching bag, and clearly I was overjoyed by how well this outfit was coordinated.

Flashback to the Fifties

I love skirts more than I’ve ever loved them before-maybe even more than my tutu days. I believe this is a sign of me fully embracing my feminine self, as I do enjoy looking pretty and dainty and wearing pink and lace and midi skirts and so on. The ‘girly’ look is eternally classy. So today I opted for a white mint midi skirt from Forever New, which was part of my successful christmas sale hunting.

I believe that it is absolutely gorgeous, and it made me think of Grease (look at me, I’m Sandra Dee!) because the outfit essentially portrays women’s fashion in the 50’s. It was a beautiful and flattering decade for fashion. I suppose the flash of midriff is a touch from today’s times.

The Most Wonderful Time of the Year

Christmas: the time of bent budgets and broken bank accounts. But despite the fact that my wallet is never ready for christmas, I am ALWAYS eager to crack open the decorations boxes and listen to some good ol’ Bublé. It’s just an incredibly joyful time of the year, and some Bublé and Jamie Oliver turkey multiply the xmas greatness.

And, oh, the food. Presents do not even compare to the joy which the Christmas feast brings. Not even the promise of bargains from the incoming Boxing Day sales can waver my attention from the food that I am fortunate enough to consume on Christmas. God, I am a lucky gal.

Since it’s a family day and we’re all a little bit classy, we love to dress a little bit special. I even honoured the occasion with a floral wreath on my head, ’cause Christmas.

The Reign of the Two Piece

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you would know that two pieces are the ‘in’ thing. No I am not talking about swimsuits- I am talking about the cute little skirts with cute little matching crop tops.

This summer, they appear to be ‘all the rage’, with their colour-coordinated glory being showcased by celebrities such as Sarah Hyland, Katy Perry and Taylor Swift. Working well on the petite bodies of these lovely ladies, the two piece, or co-ord, accentuates the waist and hips to compliment even the less curvaceous figures. However if itsy bitsy midriffs are not your thing, then fret not, as co-ords look fabulous with flowy tops and shirts which can be matched with shorts, pants, mini-skirts, pencil skirts or a-line skirts. The possibilities are almost endless, and can flatter any shape.

Naturally, I had to find my very own co-ord outfit and appreciate its harmonious view for myself with a T by Bettina Liano ensemble.

I see London, I see France

One of the most exciting things arrived in my mailbox the other day: they were stockings decorated with the silhouette of the Paris skyline. I can literally walk around with the sights of Paris daintily resting above my knee. How cool is that. So while adventuring around the city of Melbourne I flaunted the skyline of Paris, much to the bemused looks of wandering Melbournians. Honestly, these stockings caught the gaze of so many people that I almost started feeling self-conscious.

Asos had a sale on socks and stockings not that long ago which was when I came across these stockings, as well as many others with cute patterns just above the knee to give the appearance of over-the-knee socks. Only these keep your thighs warm too and they won’t fall down.

Hats aren’t Just for Bad Hair Days

I found a $6 hat in a shop the other day. I’m not typically a hat person because honestly I feel like they just don’t suit me, but the reduced price tag and the maroon colour was screaming out at me. This was the beginning of my fascination with hats-not so much on how they suit me-but other people’s magical abilities to pull them off. Nina Dobrev wears them religiously and looks fantastic. And with the amount of people rocking the wide-brimmed felt hats for winter it has become clear to me that hats are no longer confined to being worn for protection against the sun and for covering up a case of forgot-to-wash-my-hair-oops. I was inspired to wear it for non-beach and non-chaotic hair purposes on a day out. I actually enjoyed it, and I even felt lighter on my toes despite the extra head-weight which does not make sense. Unfortunately it meant that if I took it off when I was indoors I’d have to deal with some seriously static hair. Needless to say I rarely removed it from my head.

I must add that I am tremendously excited that it is now winter. Somehow the cold and grey skies make me want to get creative. And blog more. Which is something that I have neglected because education has been a large obstacle for time. Learning is great but it hasn’t left me much time to blog, or even get out of the house to be overly honest. Until next time, hopefully I’ll acquire more inexpensive and fun hats to play with!

Just Can’t Get Enough

I must confess that I have found a new obsession. It comes in the form of pretty coloured lipsticks, and I can no longer leave the house without a perky pink, blood orange or devilish red painted on my lips. It really has become a thing that is not only appreciated by me, as I can confirm that lipstick experimentation is most definitely on the rise as supported by my meticulous observations. I even saw somebody sporting moss green lipstick a few weeks back, but can’t say that it was all that impressive.

Now that I have discovered my newfound need to apply lipstick whenever an opportunity arises, I have also been exposed to the downsides of this cosmetic product, i.e. attempting to eat a burger while avoiding smudges and the whole lipstick-on-the-teeth scenario. In addition to those problematic obstacles, I am just starting to get used to using lip liner which is a necessary component of the process if you want to keep your lipstick all nice and contained. I swear one side of my lips is differently shaped to the other, therefore I struggle with this. As for the lipstick on the teeth, a decent trick is after you have applied your pretty stick to your lips, pop your finger in your mouth and then take it out, which hopefully removes the areas of your lipstick that could potentially colour your front teeth red. Just to avoid any further potential embarrassment, I lick my teeth before I smile or talk to someone. As for the hamburger hindrance, Mum made me aware of how ladies wearing lipstick should not be engaging in burger eating anyway. Hmm.

Formalities

I recently attended school’s senior formal-the school’s night of nights where the boys and girls from the senior years dress up pretty, dine and dance in an exquisite venue and have a generally fabulous evening. After years of watching the Oscars and yearning to look as glamorous as Angelina Jolie, I seized this chance to become my own red carpet stylist. I am not going to lie, organising my outfit was serious business and thoroughly exciting. I even travelled interstate to find the dress (I was on holidays) and bought luxury brand shoes (on sale, of course) so clearly I was committed. The night rolled around sooner than expected and it was lovely. The gents looked handsome and the ladies were stunning. I really don’t mind formal events, dressing up was hands-down the best part.
